The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) is one of the biggest awards ceremonies for pop music in the United States. At this year’s event on September 7th, a K-pop artist made history by winning some of the evening’s biggest honors.
Rosé, a member of the K-pop girl group Blackpink, skyrocketed to fame due to her hit solo single, “APT.” The catchy and energetic song, which was a collaboration with U.S. pop star Bruno Mars, topped music charts worldwide.
In recognition of the massive popularity of “APT.,” Rosé received the Song of the Year award at this year’s VMAs. In fact, the 28-year-old became the first K-pop artist ever to claim the coveted award— something that not even BTS has done.
At the ceremony in New York, the New Zealand-born Korean singer took the stage alone, as her collaborator Mars was not in attendance. She accepted the famous “moonman” trophy on their behalf and thanked Mars for believing in her.
“I would also like to dedicate this award to my 16-year-old self, who dreamed,” she said during her acceptance speech.
Along with her historic win, Rosé took the stage once more, this time on behalf of her group, Blackpink. The K-pop quartet was named Best Group, an award that it also received in 2023.
Meanwhile, Rosé’s bandmate Lisa accomplished her own milestone by winning the Best K-Pop award for the third time. She received the honor for her solo track “Born Again,” featuring Doja Cat and Raye.
Besides Rosé and Blackpink, the other big winners of the night were Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and Sabrina Carpenter. These female pop stars took home two VMA trophies each.
