Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and one of the biggest port cities in Europe. This year, the famous city is celebrating its 750th anniversary.
To mark this historic moment, Amsterdam has held various cultural events throughout the year. They include music festivals, art exhibitions, fireworks displays, and sporting events.
In August, around 600 ships sailed into Amsterdam’s harbor together. The spectacular scene was part of a maritime festival called Sail Amsterdam, which returned after a 10-year break.
Amsterdam was formed in October 1275, when the Dutch ruler officially recognized it. As a port city, it quickly became an important place for European trade.
Amsterdam’s commercial power reached its peak in the 17th century, which is known as the Dutch Golden Age.* During that period, the city was also a European center of culture and art.
Even today, Amsterdam is famous for its unique architecture. Its network of canals prevents the overflow of water, while long wooden and concrete poles keep buildings in place.
Furthermore, Amsterdam is one of the friendliest places for bicycles. In fact, cycling is the most popular mode of transportation in the city. Around 63 percent of Amsterdam’s residents travel on bike paths every day.
