Another record-setting summer is finally behind us, and soon, the cold winter weather will again be at our doorsteps. For now, however, we can enjoy the colorful and brilliant display of autumn foliage.
Fortunately, Korea offers a variety of travel destinations where people can appreciate the dazzling beauty of the changing leaves. It is especially popular to walk on hiking trails in the mountains while surrounded by the red, yellow, and orange hues of autumn.
One of the best places for this activity is Seoraksan Mountain. The nation’s third tallest mountain is also one of the first places in Korea to welcome the fall season.
The mountain features rocky peaks and dense forests that are particularly beautiful in autumn. Hikers can take in scenic valleys and majestic waterfalls during their trek.
Jirisan Mountain is another popular site that undergoes a marvelous transformation during the fall. The mountain is renowned for its fiery maple trees, which turn a deep red during October and November.
Nestled in the mountain’s valley is Ssanggyesa Temple, a head temple of the Jogye Order* of Buddhism. The ancient structure in autumn is a breathtaking blend of spiritual serenity and natural splendor.
Meanwhile, some Koreans insist that Naejangsan Mountain is the best place to view fall foliage. Like Jirisan Mountain, Naejangsan is known for its dense forests of maple trees that turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow.
Furthermore, the iconic Naejangsa Temple attracts over 500,000 visitors during the peak autumn season. They become transfixed by the meditative beauty of the temple’s reflection in nearby ponds, which creates stunning photo opportunities.
