On July 4th, millions of people across the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence. To mark the historic milestone, countless events are being planned across the nation.
Spearheaded by President Donald Trump, the government has launched initiatives to commemorate the anniversary. The White House’s ‘Freedom 250’ program aims to highlight American history, culture, and national achievements throughout the year.
Established by Congress,* the America 250 Commission is also organizing various activities and events nationwide. These include America’s Block Party and the dedication of a time capsule at Independence Hall that will remain sealed until 2276.
One of the largest planned events is the Great American State Fair, which will feature museum exhibits, entertainment, and cultural displays from all 50 states. Other major celebrations include Salute to America 250 and special events at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Additionally, numerous cities, businesses, and organizations are planning their own patriotic celebrations. Most cities across the country are hosting yearlong events, while companies like Disney have announced special broadcasts, concerts, and fireworks shows.
Traditionally, Americans have celebrated Independence Day with family and friends. Common festivities include parades, neighborhood gatherings, barbecues, concerts, and fireworks displays.
Independence Day traces back to July 4th, 1776, when the Declaration of Independence* was signed by colonial leaders during the American Revolution.* The document announced that the 13 original colonies would separate from Great Britain and become independent states.
The Revolutionary War lasted about eight years as the 13 American colonies fought against Great Britain for their freedom. The colonists ultimately achieved victory, establishing official independence in 1783.
As the nation reaches its 250th birthday, Americans are encouraged to show pride in their country’s history and reflect on the ideals that helped shape the nation and the world.
