The Sagrada Familia, one of the most ambitious building projects in modern history, has reached a major milestone. After 144 years of construction, the church’s main structure was finally finished.

Thousands of people gathered to celebrate the historic moment in Barcelona, Spain. The opening ceremony featured music, performances, and a spectacular light show that illuminated the Sagrada Familia’s incredible exterior. Many visitors were amazed to finally see the original architect’s vision come to life.

Antoni Gaudi

The Sagrada Familia was designed by Antoni Gaudi, one of Spain’s most-celebrated architects. Construction on the church began in 1882, and Gaudi devoted much of his life to the massive project.

Gaudi unfortunately died in 1926, long before the building was completed. Luckily, however, he left behind detailed drawings, models, and plans. Over the next century, several architects and builders continued Gaudi’s work, carefully following his original design.

The Final Tower

In February 2026, workers completed the Tower of Jesus Christ, the tallest tower of the basilica. Standing 172.5 meters tall, the Sagrada Familia is now officially the tallest church in the world.

On June 10th, Pope Leo XIV led a special ceremony at the Sagrada Familia to mark the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death and to celebrate the completion of his life’s work.
