Liberation Day
Liberation Day is a national holiday in Korea. It is celebrated every year on August 15th. On this day, Koreans remember the end of Japanese* colonial rule in 1945.Japan took control of Korea in 1910. For 35 years, Koreans lost many of their rights and freedoms.
They could not freely speak Korean or use their own names. Many Koreans fought hard for independence. They held protests and never gave up hope.
On August 15th, 1945, Korea was finally free. Today, people gather to celebrate and remember those who fought for the country’s freedom.
Fighting for Freedom
Under colonial rule, Koreans found many ways to resist. Some printed secret newspapers, while others organized protests. Today, they are remembered as national heroes.
How Korea Celebrates
On Liberation Day, Koreans hang the national flag outside their homes. They gather to watch parades and attend cultural events. It is a day to celebrate their freedom.
