This year marks a double anniversary for Hangeul, the writing system of the Korean language. Korea is celebrating both the 580th anniversary of the official introduction of Hangeul and the 100th anniversary of Hangeul Day.

The first celebration of Hangeul Day was held in 1926. Hangeul Day commemorates the writing system created by King Sejong, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest leaders in Korea's long history.

A Writing System for Everyone

In the 15th century, people in the Joseon Dynasty* had their own spoken language but not their own alphabet. Instead, Chinese characters were used. This meant that mainly wealthy, educated people could read and write.

King Sejong wanted to change this, so he began creating an alphabet that was easy to learn. Hangeul was completed in 1443 and officially introduced in 1446. Before long, people began using it in their daily lives.

The Inventor King

Hangeul was not King Sejong's only contribution. In 1420, he established the Hall of Worthies,* a research institute, to develop talent.

During his reign, many important scientific tools were developed. These included a water clock, a sundial, and a rain gauge. These advances helped improve science and agriculture in the Joseon Dynasty.
